CACC Chinese School 2015 - 2016--- Math Program (数学课程)

  AMC 10 (美国数学竞赛10)

CACC AMC 10 (American Math Competition) is a competitive math class specially designed for high school and advanced middle school students who have successfully completed the CACC Competitive Math IV and Math Olympiad IV classes. This class is to prepare students to participate in AMC 10 math competition. AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examination. It contains problems which can be understood and solved with algebra and geometry concepts. The top scorers of AMC 10 will be qualified for American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), one of the highest regarded math competitions in the nation. The class will introduce the students the knowledge and problem solving skills in Number theory, Algebra, Geometry, and Counting and Probability. A successful student is expected to do considerable amount of homework.
What we teach: This class teaches problem solving strategies and math contest taking skills.
Who should enroll: Students who are at regular school grade levels of 7, 8, 9, 10, or equivalent math grade level, with advanced math skills (such as AMC8 score higher than 16), and who have mastered the skills taught in Competitive Math IV and Math Olympiad IV.
Competitive goals: AMC10. This class does not focus on Mathcounts even though the materials in this class may be beneficial to the state level Mathcounts competition.
The class will be taught in English.
Note: The students may be required to purchase "AMC 10/12 Math Club Package" ($25). Teacher will provide specific information at the beginning of the class.

  Competitive Math (竞赛数学)

Competitive Math is a series of classes for gifted math students who seek a greater challenge in mathematics. We offer four levels of competitive math classes: Level I, II, III, and IV with increasing challenges. These classes are taught in seminar-style. The teaching is based on asking significant questions about the problem at hand, rather than showing 'how it is done'. Since problem solving is not a directly transferable skill, we need to develop student ability for independent research and reasoning. This is not a 'do as I do' class; it is a 'figure it out on your own' class and we provide experienced help that is student-centered. The focus is not on 'the right answer' but on developing different procedures. The emphasis is on comprehending, verbalizing and analyzing, not on solving problems in quantity. In this class we do not offer MOEMS competition. However, there will be many other math competition opportunities offered throughout the school year.
Homework: only occasional homework if the worksheet was not completed in class. The classes will be taught in English.
    Competitive Math I
What we teach: We teach reasoning skills applied to various mathematical contexts: numeracy, visualization, logic, patterning.
Who should enroll: Students at regular school grade levels of 1 or 2.
Competitive Goals: Math Kangaroo 1-2, Noetic Math.
4-5 workbooks may be needed and each costs around $5 which can be purchased from Amazon.

  Math Olympiads (奥数)

CACC Chinese School Math Olympiad program includes three levels of math classes: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. A pre-test is required to enroll in all these classes.
The purpose of the classes is to stimulate students' interest and enthusiasm for problem solving. Students will be exposed to challenging problems, interesting puzzles, and associated mathematics topics. They will work on past Math Olympiad problems both individually and in groups. Throughout the class, the student will learn critical thinking skills and different problem solving strategies.
In these classes, we offer Math Olympiad competitions. The students will participate in the annual National Math Olympiad Contests. Individual awards will be given out in May, including the Dr. George Lenchner Award for perfect scorers and the Math Olympiads Logo Trophies for the top scorers on each team.
The classes will be taught in English.
    Math Olympiad I
Math Olympiad beginner level class (MO I) is designed for 4th-5th grade students. In this class, the students will learn basic problem solving strategies, such as Guessing and Checking, Working Backwards, Drawing a Picture or Diagram, Looking for a pattern, Experimenting, Using a Table, Making an Organized List, etc. This class's curriculum corresponds to the material of the National Math Olympiad Division E Contests.
Note: $15 material fee will be collected with tuition at registration.

Math Olympiad level IV class (MO IV) is a competitive math class specially designed for advanced middle school students who have successfully completed MO III class. With four levels of MATHCOUNTS competition materials - school, chapter, state, and national - the class provides students the extra incentive and perfect atmosphere to push themselves to achieve more in mathematics. The typical homework and class assignments consist of:
Sprint Round: This round tests speed and accuracy, allowing 40 minutes to solve 30 problems such that only the most capable students will complete all of the problems.
Target Round: This round features multi-step problems that engage students in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving processes.
Team Round: This round involves working in groups to develop teamwork strategies.
Countdown Round: This round prepares students for the fast-paced, head-to-head competition.
The goals of this advanced math class are to help students further developing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, to motivate and reward students by fostering teamwork and a competitive spirit, and to promote middle school mathematic achievements through fun and challenging MATHCOUNTS program.
